Our intention in Science is to encourage enquiry based learning which fosters an inquisitive approach, where children are encouraged to raise their own questions as well as answer them. Our aim is do this with an inclusive approach, where all children develop a positive attitude in Science. Throughout the schemes of work, the children will acquire and develop the key knowledge that has been identified within each unit and across a mixed age curriculum, as well as the application of scientific skills. Each scientific topic builds progressively towards acquiring key knowledge and skills linked to the National Curriculum, as well as practical skills which are built on and developed throughout the children’s time at Halam School.

At Halam, Science topics are arranged in either termly or half termly blocks, to have a project based approach. These are often linked to a high quality text and scheme of work. This is a strategy to enable the achievement of a greater depth of knowledge in Science but also supports the English curriculum, with positive, contextual links, promoting a love of literacy. The knowledge rich curriculum is supported with ‘sticky knowledge grids’, available for each topic. This sticky knowledge contains the subject specific language, definitions and key information to support transference of knowledge to the long term memory. Subsequent topics build upon the learning and skill development of the previous topics and encourage a fascination with the world.

As the children’s knowledge and understanding increases, and they become more proficient in selecting, using scientific equipment, collating and interpreting results, they become increasingly confident in their growing ability to reach conclusions, based on real evidence. By working scientifically, skills are embedded into lessons to ensure skills and knowledge are developed throughout the children’s school career. Children are offered a wide range of extra-curricular activities, visits, trips and visitors to complement and broaden the curriculum. These are purposeful and link with the knowledge being taught in class. Appreciation and respect for, and development of the school and local environment, provides our children with an invaluable resource. Regular events, such as Science Week or project days, allow all pupils to experience a broader provision and the acquisition and application of knowledge and skills. These events often involve families and the wider community.

The successful approach at Halam results in a fun, engaging, high quality science education that provides children with the foundations and knowledge for understanding the world. At the heart, is our desire for our children to be knowledgeable, inquisitive learners; to experience a fascination for and respect of the world around them, which they can apply in all subjects in their daily lives. All children feel they are scientists and capable of success.
